What makes a factory a good place to work? We examined supervisor attitudes in dozens of factories across several countries in preparation for implementing a worker empowerment program. Greater cognitive load was associated with more dehumanization of workers and with beliefs that verbal abuse and sexual harassment are normative. On the other hand, a growth (rather than fixed) theory of intelligence among supervisors was linked to reduced cognitive load, less dehumanization of workers, and less tolerance of verbal abuse and sexual harassment. Consequences and implications are explored.
